Northern Adventures:
7-Day Yukon River Trip
Lake Laberge to Dawson City
by Boat & Canoe

This is a classic Yukon wilderness adventure, retracing the route of the men and women who rushed to the Klondike gold fields after the great discovery of 1896 (click here to see a map of the area).

Our journey takes us past the abandoned cabins, roadhouses, gold dredges and woodyards as well as the wrecks of some of the sternwheelers that used to ply the Yukon River. We will run famous Five Finger Rapids and Rink Rapids - sections of the river that tested the skills of the steamboat captains.

Canoeing the Thirty Mile River     At approximately the mid-point on our journey, we will overnight at Fort Selkirk, a partially restored heritage site that functioned as a North West Mounted Police post and regional trading centre.

Several rivers which are famous in their own right join the Yukon along our route. These include the Stewart, Pelly and White Rivers. The river offers superb wildlife viewing opportunities - moose, black and grizzly bears, caribou and wolves are all residents of the corridor. Bald eagles and many other species of birds will be seen. In the Minto area, Peregrine falcons nest in rock bluffs on the riverbank, and when the Chinook salmon are heading upriver to spawn from late July until September, eagles, grizzlies and other animals may be seen fishing for a protein-rich meal. A telephoto lens for your camera is a real plus on this trip.

Five Finger Rapids on the Yukon River     Along the way, we'll stop and pan for gold - the "colours" that brought people by the tens of thousands to this country over 100 years ago can still be found on the river bars! Click here to see a map showing many of the points of interest along the route, drawn by Ben Learmont of Vancouver, B.C.

In late July it's possible to book this trip so it ends in Dawson as their famous music festival begins, and in mid-August it can tie into Discovery Days, when the 1896 discovery of gold on Rabbit Creek is celebrated.

Exploring the ruins of Cyr's Gold Dredge along the Yukon River.     By mid-August when the days of "midnight sun" are past, the Northern Lights may be seen as you sit around the campfire at night.

If your time is short or you just want to do a certain section of the Yukon River, we also offer shorter trips on the river:

  • 3-4 days from Lake Laberge to Carmacks
  • 5 days from Carmacks to Dawson City

North Fork Pass     Some of our guests have taken a one-day road trip up the Dempster Highway before leaving Dawson City. This is one of the most beautiful and unique roads in the Yukon - click on the Dempster Highway photo to the right for more information about that adventure.
