5 Day Boat-Supported Canoe Trip
Yukon River, Carmacks to Dawson City

This is the classic Yukon River journey to Dawson City, but we've shortened it by
leaving from Carmacks, a 2-hour drive from Whitehorse. This is done to accommodate those of you who have a
fine sense of adventure but are not able to get away for a 10-day trip.
Trailering our boats to Carmacks still leaves a substantial journey of about
400 km on the river, but putting the canoe on top of the support boat and running through some of the
slower sections keeps things moving along nicely (click here to see a map of the area).
This is a very enjoyable trip along the Yukon's most historic waterway. We encounter abandoned villages,
roadhouses, woodcamps and farms as well as the wreckage of several steamboats. Just a few miles
downstream from Carmacks we pass through Five Fingers Rapids and Rink Rapids, where several
steamboats were wrecked or damaged due to fast water, hidden rocks and islands with rocks overhanging the
channels as seen in the old and current photos to the right.
The river is safe to paddle, with a moderate current that moves us along at a comfortable pace with
little effort needed.
We see a large variety of wildlife during our journey, with moose, caribou and bear predominating.
Salmon runs start in August and ensure some excellent bear viewing opportunities from the safety of the boat or canoes.
As well, the river has a very healthy population of bald eagles; they are seldom out of sight for long. We also may see
mink, otter, wolves and a variety of bird life including loons, mergansers and falcons as we glide silently through
their territory.
We will have a variety of beautiful campsites, beside creeks or on islands in the river. Your guide will cook your gourmet meals over
and open fire, allowing you to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet of this truly remarkable world.
Arriving at Dawson, the gateway to the Klondike gold fields, you just may get a feeling similar to the men and women who
came, a century earlier, via the same route you did. A celebration dinner will certainly be in order now that you've made your first step
towards becoming a Yukon Sourdough! After dinner, Diamond Tooth Gertie's Casino can provide some great fun with vaudeville shows and gambling
mixed nicely together (maybe you can multiply the value of all the nuggets you panned on the way down!).
On the final day, we'll drive back to Whitehorse on the paved Klondike Highway, providing you with a dramatic contrast to
the route you travelled on the past 5 days.
